Scott Martin Workshops

Early in July, our Club hosted a wonderful series of weekend workshops conducted by Scott Martin at Pembroke School. The workshops brought together enthusiasts of all experience levels for a series of hands-on, half day workshops on bonsai styling and horticulture. With almost 30 engaged participants (including observers), the event was a tremendous success and a great reflection of our passionate bonsai community.

The session focused on training and styling techniques, with particular attention given to improving the design and health of participants’ own trees. Members brought in a great variety of trees and received specific guidance from our experienced demonstrator. From wiring and pruning to repotting tips and seasonal maintenance, Scott covered a broad range of topics through both demonstration and one-on-one assistance.

A standout highlight of Scott’s visit was his demonstration on Tuesday 1st July at our monthly meeting. His expertise and engaging teaching style captivated our members as he worked on a very healthy Lilly Pilly and a large Melaleuca.
Scott walked the group through his design decisions while offering practical insights into branch selection, balance, and creating visual movement in the trees. His clear explanations and willingness to answer questions made the demo both educational and inspiring, especially for our newer members, who gained invaluable knowledge from watching a master at work.
Beyond the practical work, the session sparked plenty of conversation and community connection in the wonderful temporary venue at the Unley Oval. It was particularly heartening to see many new and novice members fully immersed in the experience.

We’d like to extend a huge thank you to all the members who attended, especially those who volunteered their time with setup and pack down… and of course, a special thank you to Scott for his outstanding demonstration and continued contribution to the club.
